Research Facilities
The Arthur Friedheim Music Library houses Peabody's extensive collection of books and music (over 100,000 books, scores, and recordings), as well as a listening lab, carrels, the Peabody Archives, and computers.
The Sheridan Libraries of the Johns Hopkins University are readily available by shuttle. The Milton S. Eisenhower library on the Hopkins Homewood campus houses over 2.5 million items.
The George Peabody Library is a specialty collection on the Peabody campus. It is a nineteenth century scholar's library. It is also a gorgeous room, in which we'll toast your success at graduation.
Non-Hopkins research resources in the area include the Walters Art Museum (just across the street from Peabody), which houses one of the finest collections of illuminated medieval music manuscript collections in the United States. The nearby Enoch Pratt Free Library is the municipal library of the city of Baltimore. To our south, the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library at the University of Maryland has a fine collection of books and manuscripts and many rare books. Finally, the Library of Congress is a mere hour south of Baltimore.
Finally, the Peabody is a participating institution in the Music Theory Society of the Mid-Atlantic, and the Music Theory faculty is active as officers and presenters in that organization.
