Joint Degree Student Profiles

Joshua Pangilinan

Joshua PangilinanMajor: Sophomore, Compostion

Teachers: Ho Chee Kong (YST) & Kevin Puts (Peabody)

What do you like to do in your free time?
Go out a lot, explore the city, eat food, hang out with friends, read books or play video games.

What is most intriguing about the Joint Degree Program?
The fact that completing my degree involves traveling halfway around the world. The musical cultures/landscapes in America and Southeast Asia are very different from each other, and the experience of immersion in both, for me, is incomparable to any number of hours spent studying, practicing, or writing. Also, having friends from all around the world is great!

What is your favorite part about Peabody?
The Composition department is great! I also love the old buildings.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Whatever you're doing, always have fun!

Andrea Lin

Andrea Lin

Major: Sophomore, Violin

Teachers: Zuo Jun (YST) & Violaine Melançon (Peabody)

What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read, listen to music, or simply, enjoy a cup of tea.

What is most intriguing about the Joint Degree Program?
It is opening yourself to a broader curriculum and exploring yourself in two different environments and cultures. It nurtures oneself in many respects, and such exposure enriches music making.

What is your favorite part about Peabody?
The classes and the knowledge that I've learned. Plus, the George Peabody Library is magnificant!

What advice do you have for other students interested in studying abroad?
Investigate!

Hengyue Lin

Hengyue LinMajor: Sophomore, Piano Performance

Teachers: Albert Tiu (YST) & Marian Hahn (Peabody)

What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to read books and do handicrafts, such as crocheting and stitching.

What has been your greatest challenge studying abroad?
Getting used to the cold weather in Baltimore! Singapore doesn't have different seasons so I'm not used to worrying about deciding what to wear every day to keep myself warm.

What is the most intriguing about the Joint Degree Program?
The most interesting thing about the program is getting to study abroad for 3 semesters, instead of just 1. On top of that, I find it very beneficial to study my major with two different professors, who focus on different aspects of piano. This has really broadened my understanding of music and piano, and it is what I find to be the most valuable in this program.

What is your favorite part about Peabody?
Everyone here is so friendly and helpful! I have a lot of fun and it makes me feel at home.

What advice do you have for other students interested in studying abroad?
Always be open to accept, immerse yourself into a different culture, and make new friends! It not only broadens your perspective, but you mature as well, be it intrumentally or personally.
