All-State Auditions Preparation Day

Maryland’s All-State Orchestras are a great opportunity to meet and share music with best young musicians from our area. The road to this event goes through All-State auditions in the month of November. Preparation for these auditions is labor intensive, and the process of auditioning is a skill in itself. Peabody Bass Works would like to help all young bass players to present their bass playing in the best possible light. For one afternoon in late October PBW will offer coaching in large and small group sessions with attention paid to each individual bassist. Advice will cover all aspects of the audition process to include, scales, tone production, etudes, excerpts and the “do’s and don’ts“ of a successful audition.
Students should arrive at Peabody to sign in between 12:30–1:00. The Peabody garage opens at 12:30, students may be dropped off on the second floor of the garage where there will be someone to direct them to East Hall. Payment is also to be made at this time, cash or check made out to the Peabody Institute for $40.
Overview of the day
The day will begin in East Hall at 1:00 PM with a short introduction session where the students will meet the teachers and receive a brief overview about the day. The students will then be broken up into their small groups to receive detailed attention on each of the aspects of the audition. Specific schedule, teacher, and room assignments will be given when the students check in.
The afternoon will conclude at 5pm, and the students may be picked up in the garage where they were dropped off. Provided below is a link to the excerpts for both the Jr. and Sr. orchestras. Included are suggested fingerings and bowings. These bowings and fingerings are intended as a starting point, but are by no means the only option. If your teacher has alternate suggestions, or if you think of something different that works for you, continue to explore those ideas as well!
