Frequently Asked Questions

Alternative Regalia and Ticket Pick-Up Times

Graduates who were unable to attend Tuesday's regalia and ticket pick-up may stop by the Student Affairs Office during the following times:

Thursday, May 18: 11am - 3pm

Monday, May 22: 9:00am - 9:30am (regalia only) & 12:00pm - 2:00pm

A reminder the following items need to be completed prior to receiving your tickets to the commencement ceremony (see the Graduate Checklist for more details):

Please note graduates are required to pick-up their regalia and tickets. Friends or other designated individuals may not pick up regalia or tickets on the graduate’s behalf.

Unused Commencement Tickets & Additional Requests

Graduates who were issued tickets for Friedberg and/or Joe Byrd Halls and no longer plan on using the tickets should return any unwanted tickets to the Box Office as soon as possible.

Graduates interested in requesting additional tickets should contact the box office at boxoffice@peabody.jhu.edu. Please include any required accommodations. We cannot guarantee seating in a specific hall but will do our best to accommodate as many guests as possible.

Academic Regalia

Graduates who have not purchased their regalia from the Oak Hall website or from the JHU Barnes & Noble bookstore will need to visit the JHU Barnes & Noble bookstore on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. Please remember the university changed regalia vendors and will be debuting a new gown for all bachelors, GPD, masters, and AD graduates. The most visible difference is the gold piping down the front of the gown. Graduates participating in the ceremony are required to have the new design.

DMA rentals will be available in Griswold Hall on Monday (group photo) and Tuesday (Commencement). DMA students attending the university ceremony on Wednesday should contact Colleen Strauch at cstrauch@jhu.edu to coordinate a time to return the rental.

Mandatory Commencement Rehearsal

All graduates participating in the Peabody Commencement Ceremony are required to attend a mandatory rehearsal on Monday, May 22nd at 10 am in Griswold Hall. Graduates are required to bring regalia to the rehearsal for the class photo.

Class Photos

Monday, May 22nd; Griswold Hall

Following the Commencement rehearsal graduates will take class photos. Please make sure you look presentable and you have your cap, gown, and hood (GPD, masters, & AD only) with you. What is not covered by your gown will be visible in the picture. Students will have the opportunity to order the group photo online from GradImages. An email from GradImages will be sent in the weeks following Commencement.

Graduate Portraits

Monday, May 22nd; 12pm – 1:30pm; Griswold Hall

Photographers will be available for any graduates interested in taking individual portraits following the class photos. Graduates will be sent proofs and can purchase the photos online.

Post-Rehearsal Luncheon

Monday, May 22nd; 12pm – 2pm; Plaza

Join the Student Activities and Alumni Offices for lunch in the plaza following the class photo. Graduates who completed the online Alumni Contact card or stop by the Alumni table during the luncheon will be entered into a raffle to win a diploma frame. The drawing for students who completed the Exit survey will take place as well.

Peabody Commencement Ceremony

Robing Rooms

All graduates must report to Griswold Hall by 9:15 AM

Graduates will check in with the Registrar’s Office to obtain their calling card. All graduates must be in their robing room by 9:30am to line up for the procession.

Notes for Graduates

Graduation is an exciting time and you deserve to celebrate all of your accomplishments. Please keep in mind the following notes when planning for Commencement:

  • The Graduation Rehearsal on Monday, May 22nd is mandatory for all graduates walking in the Peabody Commencement ceremony.
  • Graduates, faculty, and staff are required to wear the 2017 Oak Hall regalia. Please note this is a new design, the most visible difference is the gold piping down the front. Students who do not have approved regalia will not walk in the Peabody Commencement Ceremony. No exceptions will be made.
  • Lots of pictures will be taken of you and your guests, please look presentable. What your gown does not cover will be visible in pictures.
  • Graduates should leave all personal belongings with members of their families. Robing rooms will not be locked nor monitored.
  • Graduates will be processing in and out of the ceremony from the back of Friedberg Hall as well as onto and off of the stage to receive their diploma. Comfortable shoes that you can walk in are highly encouraged.
  • Following the ceremony graduates will process directly out and onto the Peabody Plaza where they can meet up with their guests.
  • Graduates participating in the Commencement ceremony must stay through the entirety of the ceremony.No students will be permitted to leave early.
  • Following the ceremony, the Registrar’s Office will be distributing diplomas in Unger Lounge. Please enjoy the reception and allow 30 minutes for the staff to prepare for diploma distribution.
  • Graduates and their guests must comply with the policies and regulations outlined in the Peabody student handbook while on campus. Please remember Peabody is a dry campus and has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol, tobacco, and all illegal substances. The Peabody staff and administration have the ability to take away the privilege of walking in the Commencement Ceremony for students found in violation of the code of conduct.
  • You are responsible for your guests while on campus. It is important that they follow the guidelines below.

Information for Guests

Graduates are responsible for communicating the following information to their guests. Failure to adhere to the guidelines below will result in non-admittance to the hall.

  • Peabody Commencement is a ticketed event. All guests must present their ticket to the usher upon entrance to the hall. Guests are required to sit in the seat indicated on their ticket. Guests who do not have tickets, will not be allowed. Small children who plan to sit on the lap of another guests should contact the Box Office for accommodations.
  • The doors to Friedberg Hall will open at 9:00am. We ask all guests be seated by 9:55am in preparation for the procession to start promptly at 10am.
  • Guests must remain in their seats throughout the entirety of the program. Grad Images photographers have been contracted to allow graduates to obtain the best pictures possible.
  • Guests are allowed to use video and hand held cameras. Tripods and selfie sticks are not permitted.
  • Balloons, large flower arrangements, air horns, beach balls, food and beverages of any kind are not permitted in Friedberg Hall.
  • Following the ceremony we ask that guests make plans to meet up with their graduate at the reception hosted on the Peabody Plaza.

Following the ceremony graduates their guests are invited to a reception the Peabody Plaza.

Disability Accommodations

The Peabody Conservatory values the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of the campus experience. Please notify her by May 1, 2017 to request a sign language interpreter at the event.

Livestream Information

The commencement ceremony will be livestreamed through Johns Hopkins' UStream site for anyone who is not able to attend. 

How long is the ceremony?

The ceremony is typically around 2 hours in length.

Graduates are invited to join us at HomeSlyce’s Mt. Vernon restaurant in the event room downstairs.

Orioles Game

Friday, May 19th, Game Time: 7pm; Ticket Pick-up: 11am – 4pm in Student Affairs

Original Fell's Point Ghost Walk

Saturday, May 20th, 6pm

Take an award winning tour through Fells Point recapping the history of the seaport town and birthplace of the sleek and dangerous clipper ship.

Paint Night

Sunday, May 21st, 7pm, Unger Lounge

Sign-ups required in advance, if you did not reserve your ticket online, please contact the Student Affairs Office at studentaffairs@peabody.jhu.edu. Tickets are available on a first come basis.

Join us to paint a notable city sight as a keepsake of your time in Baltimore.

University Commencement Ceremony

Class of 2017 T-Shirts

Alumni representatives will be located in the Conservatory Building selling Class of 2017 t-shirts. The shirts include the names of the all Peabody graduates.

Diploma Frames

Graduates who wish to order a diploma frame, should visit the JHU Barnes & Noble bookstore located on the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus or visit the online store. 

JHU School Rings

Graduates who wish to order a JHU school ring should visit www.balfour.com/jhu for additional information.

What if I am not participating in the ceremonies, will I received my diploma?

Yes. Diplomas are mailed to the address you specify in the "Address" field at the bottom of the Petition to Graduate form.
