When is the housing application due?
The housing application is due June 15, 2012.
How much is the housing deposit?
$200
My financial aid covers room and board. Do I need to submit a housing deposit?
$150 will be waived, but you will need to pay $50 for the security deposit. When you submit your application, please indicate that you spoke to us about this issue so that we only charge $50 to your credit card.
I am over 21. Do I need to live in the residence hall?
There is no automatic exemption for being over the age of 21. You will need to submit a letter of request for exemption, along with proof of age to Kyley McClain at kmcclai6@peabody.jhu.edu or by fax at 410-783-6604.
Can I bring my car?
Although you are able to bring a car, it can be very costly. Peabody’s garage is very small and is mainly open to staff and faculty. You may contact Carolyn Hill at extension 4568 to inquire about availability. Other parking garages in the area are about $150 per month.
You can also get a permit to park on the street. You will need to obtain a letter from the Residence Life Office stating your residency, and will need to go to the Motor Vehicle Association to obtain a parking permit. This costs about $70 for the year.
I am a graduate student. Can I live on campus?
We may not be able to honor your housing request. Early submission of your housing application enhances the likelihood of our being able to assign you to the residence hall. Undergraduate students with the 2-year housing requirement have priority. Your housing deposit will not be processed unless we have room for you on campus.
Can I ship my belongings before I move in?
Our mail room does not have the space to accept packages before students arrive. You will need to wait until after you move onto campus and obtain your mail box number before receiving packages.
My flight gets in before move-in. Can I move in early?
We do not allow students to move in early. There are many hotels in the area and information can be found on the Student Affairs website at http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/newstudentinfo/hotels.
I am coming in after move-in hours. What do I do?
Students can only move into their residence hall room during office hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. We suggest you find a hotel in the area if you arrive during non-business hours.
When do I find out about a roommate?
You will receive an e-mail from the Residence Life Office at the end of July with all of your housing information. If you have not received any information by August 1st, please e-mail Kyley McClain at kmcclai6@peabody.jhu.edu.
What do I need to bring? What size beping do I need?
Hangers, an Ethernet cable, and towels are the most commonly forgotten things, but obviously that’s not all you need. When deciding what to bring you should decide what is important for you to live comfortably but compactly. Peabody provides each resident with a dresser and mirror, twin XL bed, desk and chair, window shade, Ethernet internet jack, and bulletin board on the outside of the room door. So with this in mind, decide what you need. However there are some things you may not bring. These can be found at http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/3923.
Why do I have to have Meal Plan #1 as a first year student?
As a new member of our campus community, students may not know how much food they will eat in our Dining Hall. Our meal plan ensures that a student will eat at least one main meal per day during the “all-you-care-to-eat” dinners while using declining points for breakfast, lunch and snacks. The meal plan also helps cover the cost of our dining hall program and facilities since residential students are required to purchase a board plan.
I want to live with my friend…
Your roommate request needs to be mutual. Please have your friend call us, or indicate their room preference on their housing application if they have not yet submitted it.
I need a single…
If you need a single you will have to put it in writing with proper documentation and send it to Kyley McClain (kmcclai6@peabody.jhu.edu.) Documentation can be found at http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/disability. There are very few singles at Peabody and therefore they must be reserved for people who truly need them, whether for medical, physical, or psychological reasons. When all of these needs have been met the remaining singles will be given to upperclassmen on the single wait list.
What kind of computer should I get?
This is truly up to you. Some students find the mobility of a laptop is helpful because they can take it to classes and study sessions with them. Others find the desktop has more power and space which they need. As far as certain brands there is no discrimination on campus. The Peabody computer lab comes equipped with Dell and Macintosh desktops.
What kind of internet does the residence hall have?
Currently the residence hall rooms come equipped with Ethernet. Just below the Residence halls in the cafeteria and in the residence hall floor lounges there is wireless, but the Ethernet tends to be faster so we strongly suggest coming with an Ethernet cable.
How do I get out of the meal plan? I have specific dietary needs.
We work very closely with Aramark Dining Services to continuously improve the delivery and quality of food services to our campus community. If you have specific dietary needs, please let us know and we will work with you to make sure that your needs are taking care of.
Can beds be lofted?
Unfortunately, bed lofting is not an option on our current residence hall furniture.
What jobs are available on campus?
There are jobs in the library, mail room, cafeteria, stage crew, plant ops, academic affairs, student affairs, computer lab, box office, security, and faculty office. Job priority is given to students with work study. For more information check: http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/newstudentinfo/campusjobs
What banks are in the area?
Bank of America is the closest and most accessible, but there are a variety of other banking options. Check http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/newstudentinfo/banking for more info.
Where does the shuttle go? Where does the escort van go?
The escort van’s area of service is north to North Ave, south to Pratt St, west to Utah St, and east to Fallsway Rd. The Hopkins Shuttle’s map can be found here: http://www.parking.jhu.edu/shuttles_jhmi_homewood.html
