Facilities and Activities Available to Peabody Students

The Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center

The Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center includes a large multipurpose court for basketball, volleyball and badminton, racquetball/squash courts, a 30’ climbing wall, a fitness center for strength and cardiovascular conditioning, indoor jogging track, pool, and group fitness/martial arts rooms.

The Recreation Center (Rec Center) has an array of fitness opportunities that strengthen the bodies, minds and spirits of Hopkins students. Drop-In Fitness classes offer a fun, scheduled and social exercise opportunity for students. Classes such as Step Aerobics, Yoga, and Cardio-Kickboxing are offered year-round. The Rec Center also offers periodic free fitness testing, mini fitness workshops and equipment orientations to all interested participants. If extra direction, attention or motivation to maintain a fitness path is needed, Personal Fitness Training by certified trainers on staff is available at a reasonable cost. The Office of Recreation also offers in-depth professional fitness training programs for students to get certified as personal fitness trainers or group exercise leaders.

The Office of Recreation directs an extensive intramural sports program organized into dormitory, independent and fraternity leagues and a variety of sport clubs. Tired of the horizontal world? Go vertical at the Rec Center’s premier Indoor Climbing Wall. The Johns Hopkins climbing wall is open daily. However, you must be a member of the Recreation Center to use the climbing facilities.

Outdoor Pursuits makes it easy for you to escape from the city and enter into the excitement of the wilderness. Our goal is to offer you fun adventures and a chance to reenergize. Come join us for a whitewater kayaking trip on the Gunpowder, just 30 minutes away, or learn the ropes of high altitude mountaineering by reaching the summit of a 19,347 foot peak in Ecuador. It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or an expert; we have a course for you! You can sign-up for trips in the Ralph S. O’Connor Recreation Center. Outdoor facilities at the Homewood campus include six tennis courts, which are available when not in use by the varsity tennis teams. All facilities can be reserved by contacting Thomas Payne in the Office of Recreation at 410-516-5229 or tpayne2@ jhu.edu.

Varsity Sports

Johns Hopkins University has an extensive program in both men’s and women’s varsity sports. Students are entitled to a ticket, at no charge, upon presenting a Student ID card. All other varsity sports, except men’s lacrosse are free and open to the public. Schedules of sports events are published at the beginning of the first semester for fall and winter events and at the beginning of the second semester for spring events.
