Chamber Music
Leakin Hall, Room 302
The musical, technical, and communicative skills developed by active chamber music participation are critical to every student's artistic growth. Students are encouraged to form their own groups with each other. The Director of Chamber Music will place as many people as possible who don’t have preformed groups into groups, so long as appropriate matches can be found. As many interested students as possible will be placed, although priority will be given to students who have not yet fulfilled their chamber music requirements.
Detailed information about the Chamber Music Department, chamber music sign-up and chamber music events throughout the year can be found at www.peabody.jhu. edu/chambermusic.
The Chamber Music FAQ page, www. peabody.jhu.edu/4723, should answer most questions about how chamber music works at Peabody, what the requirements are, etc.
Here are a few important things to remember:
· Do not register for chamber music or piano ensemble on ISIS! Only the Director of Chamber Music can get you registered for chamber music. You must sign up through the Director of Chamber Music in order to participate in chamber music or piano ensemble.
· Always look for emails from the Director of Chamber Music with important information about programs, deadlines, master classes and concerts.
· Sign-up deadlines for chamber music are generally as follows: Fall Semester: The first Friday of classes Spring Semester: The last day of classes in Fall Semester
· All students are encouraged to form their own groups with like-minded friends and colleagues. However, if a student is new to Peabody and doesn’t know people, they are encouraged to allow the Director of Chamber Music to match them with appropriate colleagues.
· Attendance Requirement: All students who are registered for chamber music are required to attend the following concerts as part of their chamber music credit:
1. faculty or other professional chamber music concert
2. student chamber music concerts, preferably the endof- semester chamber music concerts. (Listening to one hour of an end-of-semester concert counts as having attended the concert.)
For the purposes of this requirement, the definition of a chamber music concert is as follows: A performance by a group of 3 or more people, one person to a part, no conductor.
Pianists
• All pianists who wish to play chamber music or piano ensemble in either semester must play an audition for the Director of Chamber Music at the beginning of the school year. There are no spring auditions. When assigning groups, priority will be given to those pianists who played an audition. The audition is not an entrance audition, but is for the purpose of getting to know each pianist so that they may be appropriately placed.
• Pianists who wish to play piano ensemble (piano four-hands or two pianos) must sign up through the Director of Chamber music each semester. You cannot register for piano ensemble directly through ISIS.
• If a student wishes to play in more than one group in a semester, they must first obtain permission from the Director of Chamber Music.
Peabody Honors Ensembles
The Peabody Honors Ensembles are chamber music ensembles that represent the highest level of chamber music achievement at Peabody. Chosen by audition, any type of chamber ensemble can become an Honors Ensemble- string quartet, piano trio, wind or brass ensemble, guitar, sax, or percussion ensembles and any mixed ensemble with a substantial repertoire can be eligible. Honors Ensemble auditions are held in October. See www.peabody.jhu. edu/4397 for more information.
Concert Calendar
The Peabody Concert Calendar presents the wealth of major ensemble performances at Peabody by both the Conservatory and Preparatory divisions. The Peabody Concert Calendar, prepared by the Communications Office, is available at the Box Office and various kiosks and locations around the Peabody and Johns Hopkins campuses. In addition, all Peabody events open to the public—including recitals, master classes, and lectures sponsored by various academic departments and the Alumni Association—are posted online at www. peabody.jhu.edu/events or on associated webpages.
