The Opera Program at Peabody is essentially a pre-professional training program. Performances are of four types. The Opera Theatre presents two fully-staged productions with orchestra each year. The Chamber Opera is devoted to complete smaller-scale operas, baroque, and contemporary works with instrumental ensembles. The Opera Workshop produces scenes from the standard repertoire in simple staging with piano accompaniment.
The Opera Outreach program takes an abridged version of a standard opera and sometimes a musical-theater revue to schools and other communities throughout the year. These experiences are supplemented by courses in acting, dance and stage techniques, and regular individual coaching. Choice of repertoire is determined by the needs of the students.
