2013 Peabody Bassoon Week

Phillip Kolker, principal bassoon of the Baltimore Symphony from 1972 to 2010, has appeared as soloist with that orchestra, as well as with the Minnesota Orchestra, the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and, internationally, with orchestras in Spain and Taiwan. Conductors he has worked with include Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, Sergiu Commissiona, David Zinman, Yuri Temirkanov, Marin Alsop, Leon Fleisher, Eugene Ormandy, Leopold Stokowski, Pierre Monteux, Erich Leinsdorf, Antal Dorati, Howard Hansen, Frederick Fennell, Alexander Schneider and Jean Martinon.  He has performed chamber music throughout the United States, Europe and Asia, appearing with such players as flutist Robert Willoughby, oboist John Mack, English horn player Thomas Stacy, clarinetists Anthony Gigliotti, Franklin Cohen and Larry Coombs, pianist Malcolm Frager, violinist Hilary Hahn and cellist Anner Bylsma.

Kolker is a member of the Artist Faculty of the Peabody Conservatory where he serves as Chair of the Department of Orchestral Instruments.  He has also been a visiting Professor at the Eastman School of Music, and has presented master classes at the Curtis Institute, Eastman, the National Orchestral Institute, the Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camp, where he was Guest Faculty, the Interlochen National Music Camp and in Korea and Taiwan. He has been a featured recitalist at several International Double Reed Conventions and serves on the Executive Committee of the IDRS.  For many years Kolker has been a fixture at Music from Gretna. Orchestral recordings with the Baltimore Symphony include the Vanguard, Telarc, London, Sony, Argo and Naxos labels.

Kolker made his first appearance as a professional bassoon player with the Albany Symphony Orchestra when he was fourteen years old.

Robert Sirois has recently completed his Bachelors at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore.  During this time, he studied Bassoon with Phillip Kolker and Instrumental Conducting with Harlan Parker while pursuing a double major including Bassoon Performance and Music Education.  After graduation, he was appointed as Principal Bassoon of both the Charm City Collegium and Occasional Symphony in addition to serving as a founding member of the Charm City Wind Quintet.  Starting in August of 2012, Mr. Sirois officially began is public teaching career as the Instrumental Music Director of the Reid Temple Christian Academy in Glenn Dale, MD.

Lynn Moncilovich is currently the principal bassoonist of the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra, the second bassoonist with the Keystone Wind Ensemble and performs regularly as the auxiliary/contra bassoonist with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra.   As an active freelance musician, she has performed with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, Apollo Chamber Orchestra, and Musicians of Mercy.   Presently, Lynn is adjunct faculty at Howard Community College.   Ms. Moncilovich also maintains a private teaching studio and reed business.  Originally from Johnstown, PA, Lynn received her BS in Music Education from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where she studied with Dr. Jason Worzbyt.   While in Pennsylvania, she served as the second bassoonist/contra bassoonist with the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra.   Lynn then began studies at the University of North Texas, where she received her MM in bassoon and studied with Kathleen Reynolds.  Lynn also holds an Artist’s Certificate from Southern Methodist University where she studied with Wilfred Roberts, held a teaching assistantship in reed making and placed second in the Concerto Competition.  While in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, Lynn performed with the Dallas Chamber Orchestra, Los Colinas Symphony Orchestra, Irving Symphony Orchestra, Sherman Symphony Orchestra, and the Camerata Winds, and maintained a teaching studio upward of twenty students.  Lynn has been the recipient of many awards and scholarships including the American Bassoon Company Award, Aegon USA Scholarship, and the UNT Deans Camerata Scholarship.  Lynn recently finished a Graduate Performance Diploma at the Peabody Conservatory where she studied with Philip Kolker.

Holden McAleer has been servicing bassoons for some of the world’s finest players for more than thirty years. He has extensive academic training in bassoon performance and music education (the University of Michigan), a diploma in the repair of band instruments, and has extensive professional playing experience in such groups as the Baltimore and National Symphony Orchestras, and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra. He has been a featured speaker at IDRS conventions and for other groups.
