Tuned-In
Nyshae Cheetam is a fourth grader at Baltimore City’s Lockerman-Bundy Elementary School. She was identified by her music teacher Evie Jeffries as a child with extraordinary musical talent. Ms. Jeffries recommended her for the Tuned In Program at Peabody. Nyshae now receives free private saxophone lessons at Peabody and is part of the Peabody Wind Ensemble.
Mateen Milan was selected by Peabody for the Tuned In Program, and his talent has blossomed. He has only been playing the bassoon for a year and a half, but has already raised the bar. This fourteen year old freshman at the Baltimore School for the Arts, has studied with Monica Schwartz and Julie Gregorian.
Peabody’s Tuned In Program
Responding to a need to give musically talented students of the Baltimore City public school system the education and opportunities they deserve, Tuned-In was created in 2007 by Peabody Preparatory Dean, Dr. Carolee Stewart. This music education program strives to build self-esteem, leadership, and cultural awareness through the study and performance of music. By identifying underserved, low-income Baltimore City students through the Music Teacher Mentoring Program—which is also spearheaded by the Peabody Institute—these targeted students receive private lessons, perform in ensembles, gain instruments, and participate in cultural field trips. Further, students are enrolled in music theory and repertoire classes at the Peabody Institute's Preparatory. Under the direction of Dan Trahey, Tuned-In began with six students, and has quickly grown to include sixty-one students during the 2011-2012 academic year.
