Computing Center Policies

These policies set forth standards for responsible and acceptable use of the Peabody Computing Center 's and the Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab's resources. They supplement the Peabody Policies for Use of Computer Accounts, existing Johns Hopkins University policies, agreements, and state and federal laws and regulations. Computing Center and Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab resources include workstations, communications networks, software, and files.

Peabody Information Technology (PIT) is responsible for the daily operations of the Computing Center and the Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab. The PIT office is located in the basement of the West Residence Hall. The Computing Center and the Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab support the academic research, instructional, and administrative objectives of the Peabody Institute. These resources are extended for the sole use of Peabody Conservatory faculty, staff, students, and other authorized users ("users") to accomplish tasks related to the user's status at Peabody , and consistent with Peabody 's mission.

Users are responsible for safeguarding their passwords and for using them for their intended purposes only. Each user is responsible for all transactions made under the authorization of his or her password. Users are solely responsible for their personal use of Computing Center and Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab resources and are prohibited from representing or implying that the content of their e-mail messages or web pages constitutes the views or policies of the Peabody Institute.

Violation of these guidelines constitutes unacceptable use of Computing Center and Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab resources, and may violate other University policies and/or state and federal law. Suspected or known violations should be reported to the appropriate University computing unit. Violations will be processed by the appropriate University authorities and/or law enforcement agencies. Violations may result in revocation of Computing Center and Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab privileges, academic dishonesty proceedings, faculty, staff or student disciplinary action, or legal action.

The following are prohibited in the Computing Center and the Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab:

  • Copyright violations.
  • Cell phone use.
  • Food, drinks and tobacco products.
  • Altering system software or hardware configurations without authorization, or disrupting or interfering with the delivery or administration of computer resources.
  • Installing software on any of the computers.
  • Illegal use of Computing Center and/or Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab resources. Criminal and illegal use may include obscenity, child pornography, threats, harassment, copyright infringement, defamation, theft, and unauthorized access.
  • Commercial use of Computing Center and/or Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab resources. See Policies for Use of Shared Information Technology Resources.
  • Displaying images or messages on computer monitors which could create an atmosphere of discomfort or harassment to others (e.g.. sexually explicit material, images of violence, etc.).
  • Violating account security. See Policies for Use of Shared Information Technology Resources.
  • Defacing Computing Center and/or Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab property.
  • Playing computer games.

Copyright Policy

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. code) governs the making of sound recordings of copyrighted material. The making of copies without the permission of the copyright owner, or which is otherwise not permitted under the law can subject the violator to substantial penalties. As a matter of policy, the Peabody institute PROHIBITS THE USE OF CD and DVD drives in the Computing Center and Leakin Hall Student Computer Lab to copy sound recordings, video recordings and any other copyrighted material, unless the copying is done with the express permission of the copyright owner. The person using the CD/DVD drives or any other computer hardware or software is liable for any infringement and may be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Installing, copying, distributing or using software in violation of: copyright laws, software agreements, and/or applicable state and federal laws is prohibited. Users must not use the CD/DVD drives to record copyrighted material (including music) unless permission has been obtained from the owners of the copyright. Users are responsible for the use of the copying device and any violations that may result from their use.

Use of CD and DVD Recordable

Students may only record CDs and DVDs on one computer at a time. They may use another computer while they are recording a CD/DVD as long as there is no one waiting to use a computer. Students may never use three computers at the same time.

Use of Computing Center Resources for Commercial Purposes

Using computing resources for commercial or profit-making purposes without written authorization from the Peabody Institute is prohibited.

Use of Computing Center Resources for Illegal Purposes

Using computer resources for illegal activities is prohibited. Criminal and illegal use may include obscenity, child pornography, threats, harassment, copyright infringement, defamation, theft, and unauthorized access.

Account Security

Attempting to access or accessing another's account, private files, or e-mail without the owner's permission; or misrepresenting oneself as another individual in electronic communication is prohibited.

Please Be Considerate of Others

Please be considerate. This is a public facility. Refrain from loud talking, and use radios with earphones only. Please refrain from talking on cell phones.

If you have moved any of the chairs, return them to their original places before you leave.
