What is Mu Phi Epsilon?

Mu Phi Epsilon is a co-ed International Professional Music Fraternity, whose purposes are the recognition of scholarship and musicianship and the promotion of friendship. Mu Phi was founded in 1903 and currently has 137 Collegiate Chapters and 81 Alumni Chapters, spread all over the United States and the Philippines. Many famous musicians are Mu Phi members, including Phyllis Bryn-Julson and Awadagin Pratt. Mu Phi Epsilon is open to both undergraduates and graduates, men and women, and international and U.S. students alike, and has no religious affiliation.

What's in it for me?

Mu Phi Epsilon members have special opportunities for self-advancement and community involvement. Individually, there are a large number of scholarships, competitions, and grants for summer programs available to Mu Phi members in a variety of musical fields, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. (Awards are available for vocal and instrumental performance, composition, jazz, musicology, accompanying, music education, and more.) Members are invited to perform in special recitals, and are given many opportunities to show off their musical talents inside and outside Peabody. Members can also use Mu Phi Epsilon to network - Collegiate and Alumni members both can attend District and International Conferences to meet other music students from around the country and the world. Mu Phi Epsilon is a great addition to any resume too!

What does Peabody's Phi Gamma Chapter do during the year?

The Phi Gamma (Peabody) chapter emphasizes musical performance, community service, and fun! Phi Gamma organizes multiple recital opportunities per year for members, as well as community service projects and other outreach activities. Members are also invited to participate in a variety of fun events, designed and implemented by the current chapter members. Some of our past activities include Smores Night in the plaza, BYOB (Bring Your Own Banana) Ice Cream party in the plaza, and selling candy grams for Halloween and Valentine's Day. We also sell t-shirts during the year as a fundraiser. We hold 45-minute meetings approximately every two weeks.

Sounds great! Where do I sign up?

Mu Phi Meetings and Events

Our chapter meets about once every other week to discuss current projects and to plan future events.  Each year there are two pledge and initiation ceremonies for new members – one in the fall and one in the spring.  Our first meeting of the Spring 2006 semester was held from 5:45-6:30 on Tuesday, Jan. 31, in the Centre Street Conference Room; the next will be announced soon, but cannot take place at our regular time due to the Baroque Opera performance on the night of the 14th.
