2009 Guitar Day
On Sunday, June 7, enjoy a day-long celebration of the guitar for students of all levels and ages. With a wide variety of courses from Suzuki-based instruction for beginners to improvisation, the Peabody Preparatory Guitar Department invites you to experience its community of teachers and students, and the many musical possibilities of guitar study.
Please complete the registration form, indicating your workshop choice on the back and submit with full payment. Registrations submitted without full payment will not be processed.
Early registration is encouraged to guarantee a space.
Late registrations will be accepted if space is available.

Observe a master class featuring our guest artist teaching and performing with select advanced level guitar students.

Workshop Track A
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Suzuki-based Method Lecture/Demo with Zoë Johnstone
Parent/student class observation/participation for the young guitarist, ages 4-7. Guitars will be available for student "hands-on" instruction.
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Beginner Guitar Class with Zane Forshee
Students ages 8-13 will learn seating and positioning of guitar, how to hold pick, and shifting on the first string. Students will leave playing 2-3 simple melodies.
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Young Performers Master Class with Zane Forshee/Zoë Johnstone
Observe a master class featuring young Preparatory student performers.
Workshop Track B
10:00 am - 11:00 am
Picking Techniques with Steve Yankee
Lecture/demo covering different techniques for using a pick for soloing, accompaniment, jazz and classical guitar performance.
1:30 pm - 2:30 pm
Improvisation on the Guitar with Aaron Lubliner-Walters
Students will learn about improvisation with an emphasis on creativity. Class covers many tools needed for guitarists of every skill level.
3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Creative Guitarist with Benjamin Beirs
Demo/class for students exploring ways to be creative with the classical guitar including tips for composing and writing your own songs and solo pieces.

Benefit Concert by Guest Artist Ronald Pearl

A Kick-Off to Guitar Day Featuring Our Special Guest Artist and Presenter
Ronald Pearl, classical guitarist/composer, holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Peabody Institute. He has worked with guitarist Julian Gray giving concerts throughout the U.S., Canada, and England, releasing four highly acclaimed recordings on the Dorian label. Pearl has been a guest artist and given master classes and workshops at such venues as Yale University, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Stetson University’s International Guitar Workshop, California State University’s Summer Arts Festival, and the National Guitar Workshop. He is currently an Associate Professor at Loyola College in Maryland.
All proceeds from the concert will benefit the Peabody Preparatory Guitar Department. Additional tax-deductible contributions are greatly appreciated.

Ronald Pearl Master Class Performance Audition Requirements
Those wishing to audition to perform in the master class with Ronald Pearl must submit with their registration a CD containing two pieces, minimum four minutes in length, in contrasting styles. Current Preparatory guitar students interested in being considered to participate in any master classes must inform their teachers by April 15, 2009 (more information to be announced).
