2012 Fret Festival

Don’t miss the Peabody Preparatory’s third annual daylong celebration of the guitar. The program, for students of all levels and ages, is a great way to discover the guitar or advance your playing skills.

Fret Festival passes and tickets can be purchased at the Fret Festival, but pre-registration is strongly encouraged, as seating and participation is limited.

Vendor Fair / Creative Kid's Table
Luthier (guitar builder) David Pace, and Mike Kirkpatrick of Kirkpatrick Guitar Studio, will have instruments, music, accessories and recordings available for purchase. A Creative Kid's Table will be available for arts & crafts throughout the day, and light snacks and drinks will be provided.

Martha Masters Preparatory Master Class
Preparatory guitar students will perform and receive coaching from guitar virtuoso Martha Masters. Participants will be pre-selected.

Practicing With Your Child
A class for parents with tips on how to make their child's practice time productive, rewarding and fun! This class is for parents only—children will attend "Little Luthier's Lesson." With Zoë Johnstone Stewart.

Little Luthier's Lesson
An arts and crafts activity where kids learn about the construction of the guitar and get to make their own with renowned local luthier David Pace. The guitar making workshop will run concurrently with the Practicing With Your Child workshop. Snacks and crafts will be available at this location throughout the event.

 
Classroom #1

Improvisation on the Guitar
This class teaches improvisation with an emphasis on creativity, covering tools needed by guitarists at every skill level. With Aaron Lubliner-Walters.

 
Classroom #2

Beginning Guitar Class for Young Students
Students ages 8 to 13 will learn how to position the guitar, hold the pick, shift on the first string and play simple melodies. With Zane Forshee.

Martha Masters Participant Master Class
Young guitar students from the Baltimore/DC area will perform and receive coaching from virtuoso Martha Masters. Participants will be pre-selected.

 
Classroom #1

Scales, Arpeggios and Chords for the Jazz Guitarist
A workshop on jazz fundamentals for guitarists of all styles. Guitarists will learn how to practice "horizontally and vertically." With Steve Yankee.

 
Classroom #2

History of Guitar Notation
A general introduction to the literature of the classical guitar and its precursors. The class will focus on the musical notation of the guitar spanning from its beginnings in the 16th century up through the current practices of our modern composers. With J. Scott Matejicka.

Guitar Ensemble Workshop
Guitarists of all levels can play in this ensemble session. Students will learn ensemble skills including how to listen to and watch the other players, and how to begin and end pieces. With Benjamin Beirs.

Conservatory Ensemble Showcase
This concert will feature Peabody Conservatory's finest young guitarists in the Guitar Ensemble Program directed by Serap Bastepe-Gray. Repertoire will include an exciting range of music from Bizet's Carmen to the tango rhythms of Astor Piazzolla. The concert will conclude with a guitar orchestra in a side-by-side performance with the combined talents of students from the Conservatory and Preparatory divisions of the Peabody Institute under the baton of Dr. Zane Forshee.

Martha Masters Concert
Hailed as "one of the brightest new stars of her generation," (Acoustic Magazine), Martha Masters will conclude the third annual Fret Festival with a not-to-be-missed concert. This is a wonderful opportunity to hear one of Peabody's most distinguished guitar alumni, a first prize winner of the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America competition, perform live at her alma mater.
