JeeYoung Rachel Choe

Flute

Critically acclaimed by The Baltimore Sun as "a musician of the most propulsive of lines in deftly synchronized fashion," Dr. RACHEL CHOE is currently the principal flute of the American Studio Orchestra and was a former principal flute of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra. She was the special presentation winner of the Artists International New York and a first prize winner of the Korea Flutist Association, Chunchu Music, Ewha Concerto, Chosun Newspaper, and Seoul Youth Chamber Competitions, and a finalist of the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra Concerto Award. Choe has appeared as a soloist with the Mid-Atlantic Symphony, the Ewha Symphony and the Ewha String Ensemble. She was selected as one of two flutists for Carnegie Hall's professional workshop of David Robertson and performed at its Zankel Hall. Choe has performed in Sidney Opera House, Tokyo Opera City Hall, Seoul Arts Center, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and others under the baton of the late Maestro Sergiu Comissiona. She has participated in the Norfolk, Orford, Bowdoin and Aspen Music Festivals, and the Zurich International Master Class. Choe has given concerts from the corner of a small city in a Third World country to the major concert halls in big cities. She performs and teaches music with a passionate heart for her life mission, "Sharing Life through the Breath of Music," which encouraged her to teach in the OrchKids program, a collaboration between the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and a Baltimore City public school, that introduces disadvantaged students to classical music. Choe also gives free concerts in order to serve underprivileged immigrant organizations in alienated areas in U.S. with musicians of various genres as a leader of Soultree Ensemble and TW12 Music Group. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in flute performance under the tutelage of Marina Piccinini at the Peabody Conservatory, where she also received both a Master of Music degree and a Graduate Performance Diploma with prizes of excellence in flute performance. Choe holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Ewha Women's University in Korea, summa cum laude. She has taught music theory at Peabody Conservatory, and currently is a flute faculty member at both the Peabody Preparatory and the Maryland Music Festival, and the general manager of the TW12 Music Group.
