PYP's Halloween Recital
Cohen- Davidson Recital Hall
This past October, forty-five very well prepared students ages four to twelve performed in two PYP Annual Halloween Recitals in Cohen Davidson Recital Hall. Many of the performers were new to our program and everyone did a fantastic job! Hauntimg melodies, spooky costumes, and the Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms (performed by two of our PYP faculty members, Laura Garvin, and Min Chi Wu), combined to make this recital an outstanding success. Students also generously donated their quarters for candy, which enabled PYP to send a generous donation to the GEDCO Food Bank as part of our outreach to the community.Congratulations to all the teachers and students who participated in these performances!
Welcome... to the Piano for Young People Program!
This program, modeled after the pedagogical priciples of Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, is primarily designed for the young child, but meets the needs of the beginning older child as well. The approach is based on the assumption that all children learn music in much the same way they learn their native language: through listening, imitation, repetition and a rich motivational environment created by the parents.
Parents are an important component of the PYP philosophy and must be present at their child's lessons to learn and reinforce concepts. Lessons are scheduled on an individual basis and are available at the Towson Campus during the week and at the Downtown Campus on Saturdays. Enrichment classes are the other component of this program. Beginning music theory, ear training, movement, and the opportunity to practice performing in a safe and supportive environment amongst one's peers, make PYP enrichment classes a necessary and vital component of our program. At present, Enrichment classes meet at the Towson and Downtown Campuses only. New students enroll for one individual instruction lesson and one enrichment class per week. Because Enrichment classes are limited in size, early enrollment is strongly suggested.
Students will be assigned to the appropriate class by the PYP piano faculty. Continuing students should contact their instructors if they are unsure of their class assignment. For additional information, a PYP Piano Handbook is available upon request by calling the Preparatory Office.
Interviews will be scheduled for possible Fall 2009 placement in our PYP Program August 25, 4-6pm Downtown Campus. Please contact Laura Garvin, program coordinator at lgarvin1@peabody.jhu.edu to set up an interview. Information regarding course description, individual instruction rates and Enrichment class schedules can be found in the Preparatory Course Catalog. Catalogs may be obtained by contacting the Downtown Campus at 410-234-4630, or by logging onto the Registration website at www.peabody.jhu.edu/prep and clicking the Registation option on the left. Entry level students must register for both individual instruction as well as an enrichment class. Interviews are mandatory before registration and placement. Space is limited and students will be interviewed on a first come basis.
