Competition Winners; Operas Set in Morocco, Egypt, and Salem; UFO ConcertoTwo competition-winning pianists will play concertos with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra in February. On Saturday, Feb. 4, Eunkyung Yoon, a Graduate Performance Diploma candidate studying with Yong Hi Moon, will perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major, Op. 26. She is this year’s winner of Peabody’s Harrison L. Winter Piano Competition. Then, on Tuesday, Feb. 28, Graduate Performance Diploma candidate Yuri Shadrin, winner of Peabody’s Yale Gordon Concerto Competition, will perform Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 83, with his teacher, Leon Fleisher, conducting.
Also in February, Baltimore’s Theatre Project will host an 18th-century opera and a 20th-century opera, both featuring Peabody singers and instrumentalists. Postcard from Morocco by Peabody alumnus Dominick Argento will be presented by the Peabody Chamber Opera, Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 9-12; and Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto will be presented by American Opera Theatre with music by the Baltimore Baroque Band, a Peabody ensemble, Thursday-Sunday, Feb. 16-19. The spring production by the Peabody Opera Theatre will be The Crucible by Robert Ward, to be presented Wednesday-Saturday, Mar. 14-17, in Peabody’s Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall. Roger Brunyate is the stage director and designer, and JoAnn Kulesza will conduct the Peabody Concert Orchestra.
Jason Ham, one of the nation’s leading soloists on the euphonium – a brass instrument that looks like a small tuba – will give the world premiere of UFO Concerto by Dutch composer Johan de Meij with the Peabody Wind Ensemble on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The Wind Ensemble, directed by Harlan D. Parker, is currently completing a recording project of works by de Meij, to be released on the Naxos label.

Two Chamber Operas in Two Weeks at Theatre Project
It will be Morocco one week and Egypt the next at Baltimore’s Theatre Project in February, as Peabody Conservatory students take the stage to sing in two chamber operas: Dominick Argento’s surrealistic one-act of 1971, Postcard from Morocco, and George Frideric Handel's Italian epic of some 250 years earlier, Giulio Cesare.

Three Recent Works for Winds and Electronics at Peabody, Jan. 29
The world premiere of TWEAK, a piece based on the composer’s observation of meth addicts, will take place at the Peabody Institute on Sunday, Jan. 29, as part of Digital Embrace, a free concert devoted to works for wind ensemble and live electronics. Admission to the 3:00 pm concert is free.

Peabody Opera Theatre to Present Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress
On Nov. 18 and 20, the Peabody Opera Theatre will present Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress in the historic Baltimore theatre now known as the Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric. The new, fully-staged production is directed by faculty member Garnett Bruce, who recently directed Turandot for San Francisco Opera and Lyric Opera of Kansas City and Lucia di Lammermoor for The Dallas Opera. Luke Cantarella, head of scene design at the University of California, Irvine, is the production designer. Hajime Teri Murai, Ruth Blaustein Rosenberg Director of Orchestral Activities at Peabody, will conduct the Peabody Symphony Orchestra.

WYPR and the Peabody Institute: A Classical Combination
WYPR is pleased to announce a new, unprecedented partnership with the Peabody Institute in which WYPR will broadcast performances by Peabody students on All Classical WYPR, the station’s newly launched high-definition (HD) channel. Initially, All Classical WYPR will broadcast “Peabody Intermezzo” weekdays from noon to 1:00 pm beginning Oct. 3.

Soprano Marni Nixon to Receive Peabody Medal at Graduation, May 26
Soprano Marni Nixon, the singing voice of Anna, Maria, and Eliza in three of the greatest Hollywood musicals, is the 2011 recipient of the George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music in America. The medal will be presented on May 26 in Baltimore at the Peabody Institute’s graduation ceremony. One of the world’s most highly regarded music schools, the Peabody Institute is a division of The Johns Hopkins University.

Last Peabody Orchestra Concerts of 2010-2011 Season, Apr. 27 and 30
The two student orchestras of the Peabody Conservatory, the highly regarded music school of The Johns Hopkins University, will give their last performances of the 2010-2011 season on April 27 and 30 at 8:00 pm in Peabody’s Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall, 17 East Mount Vernon Place, Baltimore. Faculty members Edward Polochick and Leon Fleisher will conduct.
