Peabody and Johns Hopkins
This is Your Brain on Jazz
Students from the Peabody Conservatory took part in a study conducted
by Johns Hopkins scientists into the nature of spontaneity and
creativity. Heading up the study was Charles J. Limb, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine who is a trained jazz saxophonist and also serves on the faculty of the computer music department at Peabody. Three Peabody jazz students played a specially designed
piano inside an MRI machine for the scientists to measure their brain
activity.

International Reach
Singapore Conservatory
In 2001, the Peabody Institute and Johns Hopkins University broke new ground with the creation of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM), in collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS). The first such partnership between an American conservatory of music and a leading Asia-Pacific university, the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music opened its doors in 2003 to an inaugural class of music and composition students. At the end of 2007, the two universities renewed their agreement ensuring a continued partnership for years to come.
St. Petersburg Conservatory
In a continuing international liaison between Peabody and the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Vera Danchenko-Stern, who coaches Russian diction at Peabody, is hosting winners of prestigious international competitions. The students, winners of the International Tchaikovsky and the Opera St. Petersburg competitions, will be touring Peabody and performing in the Masterpieces of Russian Vocal Music series for the Russian Chamber Art Society. As part of the relationship, Peabody students traveled to Russia in 2002 and 2005 to perform for the International Festival of the Conservatories in St. Petersburg.
