The Peabody Consort -- an early-music ensemble featuring faculty artist Mark Cudek (MM '82, Lute) and alumni Andrew Arceci (BM '08, Double Bass, Viola da Gamba), John Armato (BM '06, Guitar; MM '08, Lute), Yuan-Chih Chen (MM '10, GPD '11, Recorder), Candy Chiu (BM '09, Percussion), Peter Lee (BM '06, MM '08, Voice), and Kevin Payne (BM '08, Guitar; MM '10, Lute) -- recently returned from a holiday tour of Taiwan arranged by Lee, a countertenor and recipient of the Golden Melody Award from the government of Taiwan. The group performed at Bei-lu Bay Concert Hall, Chi Mei Museum, Taipei National University of the Arts, and the National Recital Hall.

Peabody Events

Students of Marina Piccinini will present a Bach Marathon on Wednesday, Jan. 23, performing J.S. Bach's flute sonatas, with harpsichord accompaniment, and solo partitas in Peabody's Leith Symington Griswold Hall. The free event will begin at 7:00 pm and conclude at approximately 10:00 pm.

Faculty member Dan Trahey (BM '00, Tuba; BM '00 Music Education), director of artistic program development for the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's ORCHkids program, will speak at TEDx Baltimore on Friday, Jan. 25, at Morgan State University, 1700 East Cold Spring Lane. The conference, titled BALTIMORE REWIRED: Reconceptualizing the Urban Landscape, will take place from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. For more information, visit tedxbaltimore.com.

On Sunday, Jan. 27, at 6:00 pm, there will be a performance by the Preparatory's Pre-Conservatory Violin Program as part of the Kennedy Center's free Millennium Stage series. Directed by Rebecca Henry, Scott Bendann Chair in Classical Music, the program is designed to support and challenge the most advanced, serious, and gifted violinists studying at the Preparatory. The Kennedy Center is located at 2700 F Street NW, Washington, D.C.

The Doctor of Musical Arts Musicology Colloquium series continues on Wednesday, Jan. 30, with a talk by Judith Peraino of Cornell University, "Troubadour Song and Globalization: Spreading the Love." The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 5:00 pm in Room 308C (Conservatory Building).

Applause for a Cause, an annual benefit concert for the Peabody Preparatory's Tuned-In program, will take place on Friday, Feb. 1, at 8:00 pm at An die Musik, 409 North Charles Street. The proceeds from the event, which includes brass ensemble performances, trumpet studio videos, a raffle, and a reception, will go toward the purchase of new instruments for participating students from Baltimore City. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for students, or a donation of a woodwind, brass, or string instrument. For more information, email applauseforacause2013@gmail.com.


Brandon Keith Brown

Brandon Keith Brown (MM '11, Conducting) won third prize in the 2012 Georg Solti International Conductor's Competition in Frankfurt, Germany. Over seven days in September, he competed against 22 candidates chosen from 405 applicants from 70 countries.


Christopher Franklin

Christopher Franklin (DMA '99, Conducting) will conduct the premiere of Douglas Cuomo's opera Doubt, based on the play by John Patrick Shanley, at the Minnesota Opera in January and February. In March, he will conduct the Minnesota Opera's production of Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas.


Holly Hudak

Holly Hudak (BM '80, Flute) was named managing director of the Cleveland Orchestra Miami. Chief executive of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras since 2004, she was previously a senior executive with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.


Tatevik Khoja-Eynatyan

Tatevik Khoja-Eynatyan (BM '11, GPD '12, Percussion; MM '11, Musicology) was one of 10 artists who performed in Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall on Dec. 1 to honor the 300th anniversary of the birth of Armenian bard Sayat Novaat. The sold-out performance raised more than $50,000 for the Armenian General Benevolent Union's Performing Arts program.


William Martin

William Martin (MM '03, Voice) has been cast in the role of Maurice in the national tour, by NETworks Presentations, of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. The show will play at Baltimore's Hippodrome Theatre, 12 North Eutaw Street, from Jan. 22 through Feb. 3, 2013.

Carol Bartlett
(1945-2012)

Choreographer Carol Bartlett, Peabody Dance artistic director, passed away at her home on Dec. 15. Since 1988, she was the backbone and inspirational leader of the Peabody Preparatory's Dance Department, planning, teaching, and serving as chief choreographer for its productions. A public celebration of her life will take place on Sunday, Apr. 7, at 7:30 pm in Peabody's Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall.


Spring at the Preparatory

The Spring Semester of music and dance instruction for all ages at the Peabody Preparatory begins Tuesday, Jan. 22. Music instruction is available at the Baltimore, Towson, and Annapolis campuses and at Howard County locations. Dance instruction is available in Baltimore and Towson. Patented Saxophone Tuner

Benita Slater (PC '91, Saxophone; BM '91, Music Education) recently received a patent for her Twist-n-Tune or TNT device (patent #US8,283,540B2), following a two-year application process. She is now exploring options for the production and distribution of the TNT, which is attached to a saxophone and twisted until it indicates that the instrument is in tune.
