Participants in the Estelle Dennis/Peabody Dance Training Program for Boys will attend opening night of Billy Elliot, a musical about a North England boy pursuing his dream of becoming a ballet dancer, at the Hippodrome Theatre on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Dancers in the touring show will present a special master class for the students in the Estelle Dennis/Peabody program on Thursday, Dec. 20. The historic Hippodrome, reborn as the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center, is located at 12 North Eutaw Street.

On Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 6:30 pm, tubists Dan Trahey (BM '00, Tuba; BM '00, Music Education), who coordinates the Preparatory's Tuned In program, and Baltimore fifth-grader Keith Flemming, a Tuned In student and Wind Band member, will perform with the Simon Bolivar Orchestra and members of El Sistema programs from New York. The concert, part of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concert Series, will be held at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, 450 West 37th Street. For more information, visit carnegiehall.org.

Chantry, an early music ensemble, will perform works by Palestrina on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 8:00 pm at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, 70 University Boulevard East, Silver Spring, Md. The performance will feature junior Daniel Moody, Sara MacKimmie (MM '11, Voice), and Kristen Dubenion-Smith (MM '05, Voice). For tickets, visit chantrydc.com.

Soprano Emily Noel (MM '06, Voice) will be a soloist in two presentations of Handel's Messiah by Handel Choir of Baltimore, conducted by Melinda O'Neal. The performances will take place on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 8:00 pm at St. Ignatius Church, 740 North Calvert Street, and Sunday, Dec. 16, at 3:00 pm, at Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 West Chesapeake Avenue. Christopher Buchanan, a Doctor of Musical Arts candidate in trumpet and a Master of Music candidate in musicology, has had his edition of Sonata 18 from G. Gabrieli's Canzone e Sonate published by Balquhidder Music. He will perform it with the United States Naval Academy Band on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 4:00 pm at Chizuk Amuno Synagogue, 8100 Stevenson Road.

David Hildebrand

David Hildebrand, a faculty member in Musicology, was the lead musicologist in his brother Mark Hildebrand's documentary Anthem, which will air on Maryland Public Television on Dec. 19 at 9:00 pm. He was also interviewed for a segment about the Star Spangled Banner on the PBS show History Detectives. The episode will be broadcast on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 8:00 pm.


Alyssa Katahara

Alyssa Katahara, harp, a student of Michaela Trnkova at the Preparatory, was a winner of the 2012 National Philharmonic Concerto Competition. On Nov. 30, she performed Debussy's Danses sacrées et profanes with the National Philharmonic.


Megan Rabe

Preparatory student Megan Rabe, violin, won first place in the Junior Division of the Asian American Music Society International Competition in Washington, D.C. She performed in the Winners Concert in the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage Series on Nov. 25. Tatsuya Ozu won honorable mention. Both study with Rebecca Henry and are members of the Performance Academy for Strings.


Markand Thakar

Markand Thakar, co-director of the Conservatory's graduate conducting program and music director of Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, will present the fourth winter conducting workshop with BCO on Dec. 15-19. The intensive workshop for 21 conductors from around the world will place at Goucher College. A 10-day conducting seminar with BCO will take place in July at the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus. BSO's Side-by-Side Concert

Four Preparatory students, violinists Dana Judy, Katherine Smolen, and Jeremy Peterson, and harpist Anna Dunlap, performed in the Anne Arundel County Public Schools and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra's Side-by-Side Concert on Dec. 6 at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

Graduate Performance Diploma candidate Maria Victoria Pedrero, first prize in the American Fine Arts Festival (AFAF) Golden Strings of America International String Competition; Doctor of Musical Arts candidate Eunkyung Yoon, second prize in the Second Asia-Pacific International F. Chopin Piano Competition.
